Are you thinking about maritime archaeology as a career? This section will point you toward universities, training programs, and field schools.

  • If you want to help out underwater projects, you will most likely need a certain level of diving qualifications. It is different for every project, so speak to the project's dive safety officer about what certifications you will need, as well as any equipment you need to provide yourself.  Head over to our Dive Safety section for more information about professional diving.
  • Volunteers may also need to have training in underwater recording an excavation. The primary training organization is the Nautical Archaeology Society, which runs courses worldwide. Click here to find out more about their training program and how to sign up.
  • Want to work as a professional underwater archaeologist? Nearly every job requires a Masters degree in maritime archaeology. Below you can find a list of universities that offer maritime archaeology degrees, as well as universities that offer individual classes or certificates in case to would like to try it out. Visit the individual university program pages to find out more!
  • Already have a Masters degree? Congratulations! A Masters is a terminal degree for more than 90% of the jobs in maritime archaeology, meaning you don't need any further degrees. However, if you would like to work as a professor or would like to be the Principal Investigator on a large grant, then you might consider a PhD program. Visit the individual program pages to compare your options for PhD, as well as check out the funding section for scholarships and studentships.
