In Memoriam of Martin Dean

Posted in News

Sadly, Martin Dean passed away a few days ago. Martin was the long time director of the Archaeological Diving Unit at St. Andrews, which pioneered commercial/CRM maritime archaeology in the UK. From 1986 through 2003, the Archaeological Diving Unit carried out survey and documentation in UK territorial waters, with Dean and the ADU team identifying countless sites for protection and monitoring. He published the Guidelines on Acceptable Standards in Underwater Archaeology, as well as co-edited the original Nautical Archaeology Society Guide to Principles and Practice. He was a NAS trustee and fellow for many years. His career included working for the National Maritime Museum (UK), University of St. Andrews, and most recently Adus Deep Ocean Ltd where he developed high resolution remote sensing methods.
