The Role of the Maritime Affairs Group

The Institute for Archaeologists (IfA) is a professional organisation for advancing best practice in archaeology and allied disciplines. The Maritime Affairs Group promotes professional standards and ethics related to maritime archaeology. MAG advises the IfA council on matters related to maritime cultural heritage.

MAG aims to:
  • Promote the advancement of maritime archaeological practice and individual professional development.
  • Promote greater understanding maritime archaeology within the wider archaeological community through the publication of technical papers and guidance documents
  • Organise seminars and conferences to act as a forum for the development and maintenance of good practice in matters relating to maritime archaeology
The Maritime Affairs Group advocates for best practice in maritime archaeology and advises the Institute for Archaeologists general council. MAG provides a forum for practising archaeologists to discuss issues relating to maritime, marine, underwater, and nautical archaeology. Membership is open to anyone. Joining MAG is a great way to stay up to date and help to address the issues facing the field today. Free for IfA members and £10 annually for non-members.
